Xiaomi Mi A1 (Mi 5X) Review, Full Specifications, Price and Alternatives

The Xiaomi Mi A1(also known as Mi 5X) is one of the latest addition to Huawei’s devices as they are yet to drop their first device for 2018, the Mi A1 is a slick and beautiful device released towards the end of 2017.

Its predecessor, the Redmi 4X was a smaller device released in May 2017, it sports a 5.0″ display, 4GB of RAM, 13MP rear camera, Qualcomm MSM8940 Snapdragon 435, Android 7 and a 4100mAh battery. It was quite astonishing.

It wasn’t a flagship, but its younger brother (Mi A1) is a flagship. Anyway, let’s quickly go through the review and the specs…

Not a phablet but, it has a right of challenge against the Huawei Honor 7x. They’re both flagships after all.

Here comes the review but feel free to Jump to Full Specs

Display, Storage and Platform

The Xiaomi Mi A1 straps on a 5.5 inches HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. Impressive but most flagships come as Phablets, 5.7 inches upwards.

Featuring 403 ppi pixels density on 1080*1920 pixels resolution, graphics are sharp and crystal, but that’s not the best we’ve seen. For protection, it comes with corning gorilla glass 3.

Unlike some flagships like Umidigi s2 pro, Infinix Zero 5, Tecno Phantom 8 and some more which sport 6GB RAM, Xiaomi resolved to bless the Mi A1 with 4GB of RAM. This however, delivers topnotch efficiency.

Under the beautiful and smooth Aluminium body lies a powerful Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625, an upgrade to the redmi 4X’s Qualcomm MSM8940 Snapdragon 435. It goes further to sport Octa-core 2.0GHz Cortex-A53 processor.

Although the Mi A1 ships with Android 7.1 from it’s mother’s laps, you have the choice of an upgrade to Android 8.0 (Oreo) or Android one (I’ll be writing about it soon). This gives it an edge over most other flagships until their upgrade is available.

Camera and Media

The rear camera combo is great, but we’ve seen the likes of it and in fact, far better ones. And front camera? It’s just unbelievable.

It sports a 5mp lens as the front camera with a soft flash and the aperture is f/2.0. For a flagship? What the hell!! That’s no better than the Hot 5’s cybershot. The phantom 8 and zero 5 both sport 13mp f/2.2 front cameras, now that’s the real deal.

Oh.. But the megapixels don’t carry much weight… well, the difference is the Zoom. Anyways, let’s move on.

The dual rear camera setup is a 12 MP (f/2.6, 50mm, 1 µm) as the major lens and another 12 MP (f/2.2, 26mm, 1.25 µm) lens + dual led flash combo. Features include Geo-tagging, face detection, autofocus, touchfocus, HDR, panorama and videos are recorded on 2160p@30fps, 720p@120fps.

For the media aspect, we have our Audio player, Video Player, Sound recorder, Video recorder, Photo shooter, Photo editor, FM Radio and 3.5mm jack for headphones.

Battery and Comms

Under the hood lies a 3080mAh non-removable Lithium Ion battery. I’m a bit disappointed ’cause I’ve been expecting even a better one or at least, the 4100mAh capacity in the redmi 4X.

Comms? Wi-Fi 802.11, Wi-Fi direct, Hotspot, GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.1 with A2DP and EDR, FM radio, microUSB v2.0 with type-C 1.0 reversible connector, infrared port, 2G, 3G and 4G.

Xiaomi Mi A1 Price in Nigeria

As at the time of writing this article, the Xiaomi Mi A1 is between #95,000 to #105,000 in Nigeria, price varies based on location.

Alternative Device

No doubt only flagships can stand against by his device. The Umidigi s2 pro, Nokia 8 , Infinix Zero 5 and Tecno Phantom 8 are its co-competitors.
