Itel A44 2018 Budget Smartphone Full Review and Price in Nigeria and Kenya

The Ups: Extremely cheap, Reasonable design with reduced bezels, 18:9 aspect ratio, perfect as an alternative smartphone.
The Downs: Below-average specifications and features.
Bottom Line: The Itel A44 is a low-budget device made to make the Android OS easily acquirable even in harsh economy, hence the low price. The features however, aren’t impressive, it could as well have been produced in 2016 or early 2017. I mean, which device still sports 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM and 32GB sdCard support?? Couldn’t even manage to come with Android 8.

Unveiled along with the Itel S42 earlier this month, the Itel A44 is scheduled for release late in March or sometime in April. As already mentioned, the device is a budget smartphone – a low budget actually –, so the specs are a bit unconvincing. However, there are still some good features like an HD display, fingerprint scanner and 4G network. Let’s see some specs.

Design and Display

The Itel A44 comes with a plastic body (frame and back) – Item’s standard – and a flat glass face. The four edges are curved – that also seems to be the “order of the day” along with bezel-less design for smartphone makers. The side bezels are very much reduced when compared to most older devices from Itel but the top and bottom bezels remain untouched, just as it is in the S42.

On the right side lies the power and volume controls while the lock buttons takes the left. Turning the device around, you’ll see “Itel” printed on the removable plastic cover towards the end, the camera, flashlight and fingerprint scanner are located at the top-center in a horizontal lineup respectively.

The display is a 5.45″ IPS LCD with 720 x 1440 resolution with 285 pixels density, 18:9 aspect ratio and capacitive touchscreen. That’s the same display feature found in the S42, just a little bit smaller.

Storage and Platform

Based on the fact that this device is a budget device, its storage features and operation platform are a bit below expectation for a device released 6 months after Android 8 has been released. It comes with a token of 1GB RAM accompanied by 8GB ROM and 32GB sdCard support once the 8GB chips out.

Unlike the Itel S42 which runs on Qualcomm SoC, the A44 features a MediaTek chipset instead. It comes with MediaTek MT6737M chip. The combo includes a Quad-Core CPU with a clockspeed of 1.4GHz and an ARM Mali GPU for effective graphics processing.

Camera and Media

Just like most other features found in this device, the cameras are not spirit-lifting as well. It features a 5MP lens with f/2.0 aperture as the primary (rear) camera and another 5MP lens with f/2.2 aperture as the secondary (selfie) camera. Features include ISO settings, timer, continuous shooting, exposure compensation, face detection (not recognition or unlock), white-balance settings and some others.

Right from factory, it has an audio player capable of playing MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, MIDI, WAV, AC3 and FLAC files, a video player capable of playing 3GP, Mp4, MPEG4, H.263 and H.264. Then we have 3.5mm jack at the top, loudspeaker, photo/video shooter, sound recorder, and factory installed ringtones.

Battery and Comms

Powering this device is a removable 2800mAh Li-ion battery which is guaranteed to last 2 days based on fair usage. Prolonged usage will definitely bring about disappointment.

Going on to the communication modules, we have Bluetooth, microUSB located at the bottom, WiFi, Hotspot, WiFi direct and GPS with A-GPS. NFC, Infrared, USB On-the-go, wireless charging and fast-charging are not available.

Itel A44 Price

The Itel A44 is yet to be released and it’s expected to be out on sale this coming April. On release, this device is expected cost a meagre amount between #20,000 to #30,000 in Nigeria. Thats about Ksh 6500 to Ksh 10,000 in Kenya. Check out for discounts on the price through the jumia link above.
