Showdown: Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon X – Detailed Comparison

Both latest devices from the most used smartphone brand in Nigeria, Tecno and Infinix, the Camon CX and the Hot S3 are the latest devices from both brands respectively. The Infinix Hot S3 (Infinix’s first device to sport a Qualcomm SoC) was released mid-march while the Tecno Camon CX (still has a MediaTek SoC on board) was released earlier this month – precisely April 5th.

Though not yet familiar with these devices, we are all familiar with the series in which they are featured. The Hot S series is known to always come with the best camera features, even better than their flagships. The Hot S2 pro comes with 2 front cameras, a feature which at the time of its release in early 2017 is very rare. It is a feet many haven’t been able to accomplish. Even Nokia is yet to release a device with 2 selfie cameras.

Camon X

Just as we were taught comparisons in primary school, “Bark is to Dog as Roar is to Lion”. So, Camon is to Tecno as Hot S is to Infinix. In Tecno Camon series, we’ve seen a lot of Camera specs that are rare. Maybe they aren’t rare anymore but at the time they were released, we had no option but to open out mouths in astonishment. A very close example is the Camon CX which has 16MP rear camera and 16MP selfie camera, and the Camon CM with 13MP front and rear camera. These are awesome.

Now that we’re in the “age” of Infinity display with bezel-less design, FHD resolution, large battery and light and sleek devices, both brands dropped devices in their “camera series” and we wanna know which one has to salute the other. Without wasting much time, let’s have both “wrestlers” on stage.

Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon X: Design and Display

Infinix’s devices are mostly adorable and the Hot S3 didn’t disappoint. Facing the 5.7″ device squarely, the top bezel houses the selfie camera (doesn’t come with 2 like the Hot s2) which sits at the right side of the earpiece space while its flash sits across on the left side. You should notice the sensor as well. The lower bezel is empty (they should have expanded the display further down) but it is significant. There are no side bezels and this gives room for 18:9 aspect ratio.

Turning the device sideways, the edges are curved. And while the left-hand side of the Hot S3 houses nothing, the right-hand side holds the volume and power buttons. They come in a horizontal lineup and in descending order, it is volume +, volume -, power key. Turning the device around, the most important feature is the camera setup. It is located at the top-left corner with the flash below the lens – like the Camon CM. The fingerprint sensor is at the “normal” place. At the center, towards the top and Infinix is printed just below the fingerprint sensor. The whole body – asides the face – is made with aluminium.

The Camon X looks basically like the Hot S3. Just that it is 6.0 inches in size, the front camera sits on the left-hand side of the earpiece while its flash takes the right and the camera setup, although camps at the top-left side, it’s in a vertical line up with the lens coming first and the dual flash following it. The network line is just above then, as seen in the Spark plus (k9). All others are the same, Infinity display and bezel-less design, the control key at the right side, the fingerprint sensor and the Tecno printed below it. They all take the same positions and lineup on both devices.

The Hot S3 is a 5.7″ device and that makes it a phablet. Its aspect ratio is the now standard 18:9 which means there’s room for a larger display. It sports an IPS display with an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 and 285ppi density. The display is clear, but it’s not as good as that of the Camon X.

For starters, the Camon X is a 6.0″ phablet device. That’s a size so many people feel comfortable with these days. Based on that, there’s no doubt that the display is larger. The aspect ratio is 18:9 as well, because it sports the bezel-less design with its display reaching both ends. The display is accompanied by an HD resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels for the lite version and FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels with a whopping 402ppi density for the pro. Although it’s an IPS display, its technology is far beyond that of the Hot S3. That’s a notable point.

Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon X: Platform and Battery

Get the screws out and take of the aluminium covering off the Infinix Hot S3 and you’ll be staring at a Qualcomm chipset, the same one used for the Nokia 6, that’s the Snapdragon 430 and it’s accompanied by a 1.4GHz Octa-Core CPU and Adreno 505 graphics processor. The Camon X on the other hand comes with a MeidaTek chipset. The Helio P23 MT6763T which brings along an Octa-Core CPU with 2.0GHz and the Arm Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. Looking at that, we know which is which.

These are recent phones and we aren’t looking at Android 7.0 here. The new kid on the block is the Android 8, Oreo and these devices come with nothing less than that. The Hot S3 however has its OS customised with Infinix’s XOS latest UI, the Hummingbird. The Camon X also comes with Tecno’s UI, the HiOS v3.3. Both UIs are impressive.

For storage, the Infinix Hot S3 sports 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM. Should in case the internal storage gets exhausted, it could be expanded up to 128GB with an sdCard. The Camon X on the other hand comes with 3GB RAM and 16GB ROM for the base version while the pro version comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB ROM. Their storage can also be expanded as high as 128GB with an sdCard. The slots are dedicated.

Concerning the battery however, Infinix do not fuck up. And they didn’t fuck up in this one as well. Powering the Hot S3 is a 4000mAh battery which is guaranteed to last 2days on average use. Tecno couldn’t catch up with this as they paired the Camon X with a 3750mAh battery. That’s close, and the difference is only an hour or 2. However, both devices come with the fast-charge tech and could go from 0 to 100% in 2 hours.

Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon X: Camera and Comms

Unlike its predecessor which came with dual selfie camera, the Hot S3 features a single 20MP wide-angle camera with dual led flash to brighten up pictures and for the primary camera, it brings along a 13MP wide-angle camera with dual-LED flash as well. The Camon X is even better as it comes with a 16MP rear camera. No doubt the pictures won’t be wowing. And for the front camera, it sports a 20MP camera for the lite version and 24MP camera for the pro version. And because of the Android 8, it also comes with the facial unlock feature.

For the communications aspect, both devices support 4G LTE, 3G and 2G networks, none comes with USB type-C but the Camon X has reversible connector while the Hot S3 has USB On-The-Go. 3.5mm jack, WiFi 802.11, Hotspot, 2 Dedicated sim slots, 1 dedicated sdCard slot and GPS are features they have in common. The Camon X sports Bluetooth v5.0 while the Hot S3 sports v4.2.

Infinix Hot S3 vs Tecno Camon X: Price

Based on the specs we’ve seen above, everyone is sure of the fact that the Camon X has more eye-catching features than the Hot S3, and due to that, it will definitely be more expensive. While the Infinix Hot S3 falls between #60,000 to #70,000 in Nigeria, the Tecno Camon X is expected to be about #85,000 to #100,000

Denouement

Both the Hot S3 and the Camon X are good phones. Fact remains that the Camon X could be considered more functional based on the specs, but when the price is considered, the Hot S3 is more affordable and the battery is impressive.
